Bang & Olufsen Medicom presents paper on patient compliance

Copenhagen April 18th 2006. Bang & Olufsen Medicom, an innovative drug delivery device solutions provider for the Pharmaceutical industry, will present a poster abstract entitled; “Can Patient Adherence be Improved with Technology?” at the Respiratory Drug Delivery X' (RDDX) conference in Florida, April 23-27.

The abstract focuses on the issues of patient adherence (compliance) within the areas of Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and argues that a combination approach of patient education and intelligent drug delivery devices may be one way to improve the patient’s ability to remain compliant to their treatment regime.

The main author, PHD student Arne Christensen, examines ways of preventing under-usage in these patients. He argues even as medication becomes more effective, the issue of the patient remaining faithful to their medication regime still remains. The paper suggests that special reminder features and intelligent drug packaging for medication, shown to have impact in other areas of treatment, could also help asthma and COPD patients.
