Bang & Olufsen Medicom - provides solutions to patient compliance issues

Bang & Olufsen Medicom to present on innovative solutions to empower patients - International Scan Pack Press Conference in Gothenburg 2006

Copenhagen May 8th 2006. Bang & Olufsen Medicom, an innovative drug delivery device solutions provider for the Pharmaceutical industry, will present on the topic of “Innovative packing solutions to empower patients” at an International Press conference announcing the Scan Pack 2006 conference in Gothenburg, Sweden from 8th -9th May.

The presentation will focus on the issues of patient compliance whereby an average patient only takes every second dose of their prescribed medication*, this is a problematic situation which is common across many chronic disease treatment areas including Asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) hypertension, depression and other cardiac related illnesses. The presentation will show how a company borne from the innovative culture of Bang & Olufsen has leveraged its skills in acoustics, electronics, intelligent design and consumer knowledge to form a dedicated affiliate – Bang & Olufsen Medicom – w focus on developing drug delivery device solutions to help patients with their compliance levels.

Numerous studies and papers have found that the average patient compliance rate is approximately 50% this in turn leads to billions of euros worth of additional expenditure for the Healthcare providers, Government and added expense in terms of lost revenue due to extended sick leave annually. In addition this behaviour can have serious consequences for the patient including hospitalization and in some severe cases, death.  The presentation makes the point that a combination approach of patient education and intelligent drug delivery devices may be one way to improve the patient’s ability to remain compliant to their treatment regime.

The presentation given by Treasa Devine, the PR and Communications manager at Medicom, points out that even as medication becomes more effective, the issue of the patient remaining faithful to their medication regime still remains. The presentation suggests that special reminder features and intelligent drug packaging for medication, shown to have impact in other areas of treatment, could also help a large variety of patients in the future including asthma and COPD patients.

Bang & Olufsen Medicom are currently expanding their range of patient compliance enabled devices to include inhalers, tablet reminders and injection pen compliance caps.
