In April at the Respiratory Drug Delivery (RDD) conference Europe 2007, Bang & Olufsen Medicom, an innovative provider of drug delivery solutions for the pharmaceutical industry presented a poster with the title ‘Ease of use of Inhaled Insulin Therapy – Survey on the Insulair®’. The poster presented key conclusions from a pilot study on the pMDI inhaler, Insulair® conducted among physicians and representatives from the pharmaceutical and medical device industry. The new inhaler from Bang & Olufsen Medicom was received very positively by the respondents.
An alternative to existing solutions
Inhaled insulin has the potential to reduce the number of injections to a once daily treatment of long acting insulin*. Inhalation of insulin is preferred by most patients, as injection related problems are avoided**. As an alternative to the existing solutions on the market, Bang & Olufsen Medicom recently developed a new pMDI insulin inhaler, the ‘Insulair®’.
Crucial inhaler features
The respondents gave their feed back on a number of features including reservoir for multiple doses, breath actuation, 2-step inhalation, dose counter and the compact size of device. As presented on the poster at the RDD conference, the survey concludes that the ease of use of inhaler devices and the dose counting features are crucial. At the revelation of the survey results, Arne Christensen, Clinical Trial Manager and author of the poster, said: ‘The overall feedback on the inhaler device is very positive. The comments from the respondents in this pilotstudy were very encouraging. They were impressed by the overall concept, its ease of use and especially the integrated dose counter function. In conclusion it is definitely worthwhile to continue working on this product’.
